Program Areas: Key Issues: 2007 Farm Bill

Every five to seven years Congress examines and reauthorizes the federal farm, food, and rural policies of the U.S. These policies are part of a legislative package called the “Farm Bill” and set the overall direction of the U.S. food system for a specified period of time. Many of the provisions in the current farm bill, the Farm Security and Rural Investment Act of 2002, are scheduled to expire in 2007. As a result, the 110th Congress is expected to reauthorize the farm bill sometime this year. For general background and information about the Farm Bill, read our Farm Bill Primer. In preparation for the upcoming farm bill reauthorization, member organizations of the Sustainable Agriculture Coalition have held listening sessions and workshops all across the country with farmers and ranchers, conservationists, and rural and urban citizens with keen interest in food and farming. The policy documents below reflect the collective vision that emerged from these sessions. The vision is one where a safe, nutritious, ample and affordable food supply is produced by a legion of family farmers who can make a decent living pursuing their trade, utilize methods and inputs that conserve their resource base and keep healthy their environment, and are recognized for their contributions to the strength and stability of their communities. For more information about specific policies that advance this vision, please see the documents below:
